Greetings Midrealm,
With the support of Their Majesties and Their Highnesses, know that the Middle Kingdom will NOT be changing the current no feasts/communal food requirements. As such, please continue for the foreseeable future as we have been for the last month.
To help clarify, this means the ONLY restrictions the Middle Kingdom has at this time are as follows:
- You must be pre-registered or you cannot attend a weekend event. Pre-registration should include, at a minimum, information required for contact tracing purposes.
- ALL events (weekend events, meetings, fighter practice, guild meetings, etc.) MUST complete a contact tracing form with VIABLE contact information for all attendees, including children, for each event.
- Post the Board required language…everywhere. If in doubt, post it.
- NO FEAST/COMMUNAL FOOD is permitted.
- * 5 gallon jug of water/Gatorade where everyone helps themselves are not approved in the Midrealm at this time as it creates a safety concern of too many touch points. So bring your own hydration.
* Food spreads provided by SCA groups or households where people graze are not permitted. Please pack your food/snack accordingly. Individuals may have shared food among small groups, but must have a sign indicating that the food is provided by an individual, and not a SCA group/household, and is consumed at an individual’s own risk.
* After discussions, a lunch tavern may be permitted, but MUST have the food individually pre-packaged and be served by a single gloved individual. There should not be communal seating – patrons should return to their day camps to eat.
The Board required language should be clearly displayed near the “tavern.”
* Please, do not get creative with these rules. While I’m sure loopholes can be found in these simple rules, we are concerned with safety. Bear this in mind.
If there is a report of a positive testing of an individual who attended your event, please contact me, with a copy to your Regional, so we can discuss the process required.
Above all, remember to be gentle with each other.
Don’t crowd people. Give space if asked.
Nobody is required to tell you if they are vaccinated.
Groups are NOT permitted to check or ask for proof of vaccination, although requests may be gently made requesting masking or vaccination.
Please request a copy of approved language to this effect from your Regional Seneschal. Masks may be worn, but are not required. Comments on people wearing them are not needed.
Be extra kind to your officers, the Royals, Curia, Baronage, Regionals, Deputies, and Local Officers – we are all volunteers and doing the best we can to serve you and the Kingdom. Changes occur quickly and sometimes while we are working at our “other” jobs, so we can’t respond as quickly. We beg your patience and understanding.
Finally, regardless of your office, or even if you have no office, do not feel obligated to attend any event if you don’t feel comfortable. If someone tries to guilt you, come to me. I’ll tell you personally, it is OK.
You are NOT obligated.

Rules Regarding Reopening the Middle Kingdom – July 1, 2021
- All rules are subject to change according to the direction of the Crown / Kingdom Seneschal.
- Masks and vaccinations
- a Masks are no longer required for attendance.
- b. Reminder: NO asking for vaccination cards or negative test results.
- If sites require vaccination cards or testing results, contact the Kingdom Seneschal at [email protected]. The Kingdom Seneschal will need detailed information, including who from the site will be responsible for checking, if they will be keeping records, how they will know if everyone has been checked, and how they will handle children 11 and under or others who cannot be vaccinated.
- c. The following must be posted at event notices, flyers, online announcements, and advertisements, as well as being posted in multiple locations, including Gate, at all events:
Although the SCA complies with all applicable laws to try to ensure the health and safety of our event participants, we cannot eliminate the risk of exposure to infectious diseases during in-person events. By participating in the in-person events of the SCA, you acknowledge and accept the potential risks. You agree to take any additional steps to protect your own health and safety and those under your control as you believe to be necessary.
- 3. Events
- “Events” are defined as any official SCA activity including practices, meetings and weekend events
- Pre-registration for “weekend” events is Required.
- SCARs or some other form of gathering attendees contact information, membership numbers, etc. (ex. Google Forms, Sign-up Genius, Survey Monkey, etc.), is required. Acceptance of electronic payment is highly encouraged in order to help keep lines short and minimize contact points.
- Practices, meetings, and gatherings (A&S) MUST have sign in sheets where attendees gather VIABLE contact information and attendees’ modern name for contact tracing purposes. All attendees, even children, must be signed in.
- 4. Food at Events
- NO COMMUNUAL FOOD
- This means no fighter food
- No shared drinks/Gatorade
- No group provided lunch tavern, unless it is individually wrapped and distributed by a single person wearing gloves
- No hospitality table
- No FeastsEvents can provide individual bottles of water/Gatorade/etc., but this should be limited.
- NO COMMUNUAL FOOD

Greetings Populace!
As you may now be aware, the Board of Directors has made another change to the re-opening requirements. However, as Kingdoms have the ability to keep more stringent requirements as it sees fit during this re-opening process, know that the Middle Kingdom will continue to REQUIRE pre registration for all “weekend” events.
“Weekend” events are the events typically held on a Saturday or over a weekend where we require the participants to come in pre-17th century dress and typically charge a site fee to attend. “Weekend” events do not include other official SCA activities such as business meetings, guild meetings, fighter practices, social gatherings, or other SCA activity. This means attendees of “weekend” events MUST pre-register to attend. Pre-registration will be kept open until the day before the event for those not certain. If in doubt, pre-register!
The Middle is keeping this requirement for several reasons including:
- Quicker check in time reduces the long line of people huddled closer than 6 feet or other social distance and reduces lines at peak times for any length of time.
- Reduces touch points. By pre-registering all required information can be gathered up front so its simply a matter of providing a name and checking them off on the list. Not only does this move everything along, but reduces the number of items, papers, etc. that are being touched by attendees and staff making it safer.
- Compliance! It ensures that the required information for contact tracing is gathered, which current forms do not have a space for and avoids adding an additional step which could easily be “forgotten.”
And remember, regardless of whether it is a “weekend” event or just an event (the all encompassing term used by Copora to include all official SCA gatherings), a roster/sign-up for contact tracing will be required at all official SCA activities. So if your local senschal encourages you so pre-register in order to gather this information, please consider doing so. They will be required to maintain a list and our many local seneschals could use all the help in easing the burdens as we start gathering again!!

5/29/2021 From their Majesties of the Middle Kingdom
- Martial activities will continue to be prohibited in the Middle Kingdom through June 30, 2021. This includes meetings, practices, and events.
- Starting on July 1, 2021, all martial activities will be permitted as normal, with the exception that we must continue to follow Society directives on no shared water/food, and attendance at activities should be preregistered.
- All martial authorizations and marshal warrants that were valid at the beginning of the shutdown will have their expiration date set for July 1, 2022.
